June 1, 2018 (CHILLIWACK) –– After temporarily closing in June 2017 for construction, the Chilliwack Family YMCA will re-open to the public in January 2019. The new building will be 25% bigger than the previous facility, growing to 36,700 square feet with the goal of serving more than 8,000 people.

“We originally planned to open in the summer of 2018,” says Karen Price, General Manager of the Chilliwack YMCA. “Due to unforeseen construction delays, we will now re-open to the public in January.”

This expansion will enable the Y to offer current programs as well as new programs to serve our rapidly growing community:

  • Physical literacy programs to help kids develop critical movement skills
  • More adult group fitness classes
  • Expanded pool hours
  • More swimming lessons

The revised construction timeline will result in a fully updated pool––rather than the originally planned facelift––and all change rooms being fully redesigned with all-new finishes and fixtures. The new building includes:

  • Expanded lobby and welcome area
  • Gymnasium
  • Warm water indoor pool and whirlpool
  • Five multipurpose rooms
  • Strength and Conditioning space
  • Change rooms for all ages and abilities, including Family/Universal change rooms open to all
  • Social area to connect with others
  • CycleFit and group fitness studios
  • Stretching and adaptive space
  • Childminding area and playground

“We are excited to bring a new, updated centre of community to Chilliwack children and families so that everyone can reach their full potential,” says Price. “Trust me, it will be worth the wait.”
