Critical issues affecting our communities:

High inactivity levels. While 84% of young kids aged 3-4 are accumulating at least 180 minutes of daily physical activity of any intensity, Canadian kids, ages 5 to 17, get a failing grade with only 5% achieving the recommended 60 minutes of energetic physical activity per day.

1.5 million British Columbians are classified as physically inactive. Rates are particularly low for low income individuals and immigrants.

High rates of sedentary behaviour. For people who sit most of the day, their risk of heart attack is about the same as smoking.

Too much screen time. Daily overuse of social media and technology has a negative effect on the health of children and teenagers by making them more prone to anxiety, depression and other pyschological disorders.

Less than half the respondents in the current "My Health, My Community" study of Lower Mainland residents rated their health as good or very good.

Only 16% of men and 26% of women in BC are ready to adopt healthier lifestyles.

High rates of obesity. One in four British Columbians are obese.

One in three British Columbians is living with one or more chronic diseases.

Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, asthma and mental health conditions are becoming more prevalent between the ages of 0-29.

High rates of chronic disease are costing BC more than $573 million each year.

Our Commitment:

We believe developing healthy attitudes and behaviour at a young age helps prevent chronic disease. That's why we include fun, physical activity in all our children's programming.

We believe people need to be active at every stage of life. That's why we provide supportive environments, expertise and a range of opportunities to make healthy choices easier for all ages and stages.

We believe the YMCA can play a leading role in an integrated community health system. That's why we are proud to offer programs and services that focus on prevention and healthy living while providing ongoing support.

We believe that healthy living contributes to overall happiness. That's why we offer programs and services that enable people to thrive in spirit, mind and body.
