As a single dad of three young daughters, ages 6, 3 and 2, Richard realized that he was going to need some help. He was without a support system and felt like he wasn't making the best decisions for himself and his family. Richard knew that in order to get his life in order, he would need to get some help with his girls.
A friend of Richard’s suggested he visit the Bob and Kay Ackles YMCA Nanook House, a child care centre located in Vancouver. There, Richard met with the manager and realized that not only would they be able to care for his two youngest daughters, Richard would be able to receive financial assistance as well.
“Nanook is more than a place that takes care of kids. It’s a place where the whole family is supported. It’s a place where parents can learn new skills and get connected to their community. I've learned to cook through their community kitchens and Wednesday night family dinners. I know what a healthy meal is. I now cook for my girls and hardly ever feed them processed foods.”
Thanks to our YMCA Strong Kids Campaign donors, families like Richard’s are able to get the help and support they need. Not only was Richard able to find child care he could afford, he was also able to find a community, learn how to cook healthy meals and most importantly connect with his daughters.
