Happy New Year, everyone! What are you most excited about for 2019? Here at the Y, we’ve got a lot to look forward to and we couldn’t wait to share it all with you. Read on to learn about some of the exciting things coming up this year.

The New Chilliwack YMCA will be Opening

We’ve been hard at work renovating the Chilliwack YMCA over the past year. The new Chilliwack YMCA will be 36,700 square feet—25 per cent larger than the old one. Finally, we’re nearing the finish line and are looking forward to opening our new centre of community in 2019.

With this expansion, you will enjoy the same programs you know and love at the Y, as well as new programs:

  • Physical literacy programs to help kids develop critical movement skills
  • More adult group fitness classes
  • Expanded pool hours
  • More swimming lessons
  • Y Play—a new approach to childminding that helps children develop life skills

We anticipate the following timeline:

  • Phase 1: Open to the public, excluding the pool, on February 18, 2019.
  • Phase 2: Open the pool by the end of March 2019.

Will you be returning to the new Y once it opens? We now have more information on Chilliwack YMCA membership fees.

Coquitlam is Getting a New Y

At the Y, our goals are to help children and families thrive, promote healthy living and foster belonging and connection. We believe that everyone needs a safe and welcoming space.

That’s why we are building four new centres of community in Chilliwack, Coquitlam, Surrey City Centre, and South Vancouver over the next number of years. These centres will help us serve thousands of more people across the Lower Mainland with life-enhancing programs.

We’re excited to start building a new YMCA in Coquitlam and will be breaking ground later this year! This new space will be 60,000 square feet. It will give us the opportunity to help more than 16,000 children, teens, adults and seniors in the Tri-Cities area reach their full potential.

Four YMCA Child Care Centres Are Piloting a $10 Per Day Universal Child Care System in BC

The BC government has selected 53 prototype sites in the province to pilot the Universal Child Care System. This system hopes to bring more affordable child care options to families in the province. Under this system, families will pay no more than $200 per child per month for full-time child care—that’s $10 per child per day!

We are thrilled to share that four YMCA child care centres in the Lower Mainland are among the 53 prototype sites that have been selected! These include Bob and Kay Ackles YMCA Nanook House, Elm Drive YMCA Child Care Centre, Woodwards YMCA Child Care Centre and Little Scholars YMCA Child Care Centre.

New Way to Register for YMCA Programs Online

This year, we’ll be launching a new online registration system to help you participate in all the programs the Y has to offer!

In the long-term, this new system will provide you with many ways to manage your membership and other Y programs online. In the short-term, we will launch the system in stages to ensure your access to Y program registration is consistent. We’ll have more information in the coming months.

New Program Sessions Starting Soon!

To help you and your families thrive, we offer a variety of YMCA programs. Keep an eye out for new sessions for Mindfulness programs, the Post-Secondary Youth Internship Program, Immigrant Services programs and much more.

A new addition this year is the Family Healthy Living Program. This program is designed for families with children between ages 8 to 12 who are off the healthy weight trajectory. Visit the Family Healthy Living Program website for more information.

New Camp Options at YMCA Camp Elphinstone

For those looking for some added adventure, YMCA Camp Elphinstone is introducing three new camp options. These include Sunshine Coast Trail I (12-14 years), a one-week camp that includes a four-day backpacking trip and is a great opportunity for campers who are new to out-tripping; Sunshine Coast Trail II (13-15), a two-week offering that features a nine-day backpacking trip from Lois Lake to Powell River; and Leadership Development II Exchange (13-15 years), which is a new three-week program that builds off the regular Leadership Development II program and includes a one-week exchange to Ontario.
