Happy 2020! Here at the Y, we’re excited to kickoff a new decade and continue our work to help children, teens, adults and seniors thrive. To commemorate the new year, we’re introducing a few new programs, as well as adding new locations and sessions for existing ones. Here are a few programs that you should know about! 

New YMCA Programs Starting in 2020 

  1. Food Skills for Families at the Tong Louie Family YMCA
Is it your goal to eat healthier this year? The Food Skills for Families program might just be for you! This free hands-on, skill-building program will teach you everything you need to know about making healthy meal choices and more! 
  1. The Motherhood Project Programs at the Tong Louie Family YMCA
We’re excited to introduce four new programs for new and expecting mothers at the Tong Louie Family YMCA. The classes are offered in partnership with the Motherhood Project and include: 
  1. Rock Step Swing Dance at the Tong Louie Family YMCA
Throw on your dancing shoes and come join us for Rock Step Swing Dance! Classes will run weekly starting Saturday, January 18th and will run for 8 weeks. This is a registered class and is open to members for $120 and non-members for $144. For more information or to register, give us a call at 604-575-9622. 
  1. Water Running at the Chilliwack YMCA
Try something new this winter! The Chilliwack YMCA is introducing Water Running—a low-impact class that will challenge you in new and exciting ways. Participants will have a moderate to intense workout which focuses on abominal strength and cardio. 
 
Starting February 3rd, this class will be offered mid-day on Mondays and Wednesdays, and in the morning on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Stay tuned for more details! 

New Program Sessions and Program Locations

In addition to our new programs, we’re also introducing new locations for some of our existing programs. We also have new sessions for other programs coming up. Take a look!
  1. Upcoming Winter and Spring Sessions for YMCA Mental Wellness Programs
Put your mental well-being first this year! Did you know that the YMCA offers free mental wellness programs for people ages 13 to 30? New sessions for the following programs are starting soon: 
  1. The Next Round of Y Nexus is Coming Up Soon
As an inclusion-based program, Y Nexus focuses on reconciliation and awareness of Indigenous ways of being. This fun and eye-opening three-day program is open to young adults ages 18 to 30 and takes place at YMCA Camp Elphinstone on the beautiful Sunshine Coast. Join us this year from February 24-27! 
  1. New Healthy Heart Program Classes in Port Moody and New Westminster
The YMCA Healthy Heart program has added a new Maintenance class in Port Moody to help participants to continue moving forward on their healing journey and welcome new cardiac patients. This new class runs on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:30 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. at the Port Moody Recreation Centre.
 
In addition, the program has also introduced a second medically managed Healthy Heart class in New Westminster. This class runs on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 7:00 a.m. to 8:15 a.m. at the Centennial Community Centre.
 
To participate, you must be referred to the program by a physician. To learn more about or to register for the Healthy Heart and Healthy Heart Maintenance programs, please email us at healthy.heart@gv.ymca.ca or call 604-521-5801. 
  1. New Generation Health Class in Coquitlam
 We’re excited to expand the Generation Health program to Coquitlam this March! It is a free, family-based program that runs for 10 weeks. It’s designed for families with children ages 8-12 who are off the healthy weight trajectory. The weekly two-hour sessions focus on giving you all the tools you need for success—goal-setting, healthy eating, physical activity, sleep hygiene, healthy body image, self-compassion and positive parenting. Participants will come away with new knowledge and new connections too!
 
Interested? The program starts on March 2, 2020 and will run on Mondays from 5:45 pm to 7:45 pm at the Pinetree Community Centre in Coquitlam. To register, please call 1-888-650-3141 or email info@generationhealth.ca
