Summertime! It’s the perfect time for youth to be more active. And it might be more important than you realize.
We all know that when teens are being physically active, it is great for their physical health. But we often overlook the important effect physical activity has on their mental health as well.
“Exercising is more than just giving teens something to do.” says Matt Kore from the Jumpstep Program at the Langara Family YMCA. “Every day we see teens thriving because they are getting active. It can help with depression and improve their mood and overall well-being.”
“Teens are sometimes reluctant to get involved as they might not have had a positive experience with team sports or in PE class in the past. Fortunately the Y has plenty of different fitness options—it’s a supportive environment for everyone.”
“In the end, we just want teens to have fun while being active. It’s a bonus when they tell us how their confidence has increased in all areas of their life.”
This summer, the Y is encouraging youth to get active and meet new friends in a safe and welcoming community. We are offering a free YMCA membership to any teen from the age of 13 – 18. The YMCA Teen Summer Membership is available now and is valid until August 31, 2017 at any YMCA of Greater Vancouver location. Teens can access the YMCA from Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and all day on weekends.
To sign up, teens can visit any YMCA of Greater Vancouver location with a parent or guardian. Don’t forget to bring your photo ID!
