It takes a team to create amazing memories for the over 10,000 kids who participate in a YMCA summer camp each year. We'd like you to meet Kinza, Alex and Kyle, three members of our day camp staff team, who will be playing a huge part in providing this year's campers with experiences that will be remembered for years to come!

Day Camp Staffer: Kinza Butter

Q: How many years have you worked with YMCA summer camps?
I am entering my second year working at a YMCA summer camp.

Q: Which summer camp program are you going to be at this year?
I am going to be spending the summer at our Tong Louie YMCA Day Camp at Sullivan Hall.

Q: What are you excited about when it comes to your opportunity with the Y and being part of another year of summer camps?
I'm looking forward to building new relationships with my staff and the kids this summer. I'm excited to gain more experience, which will hopefully open the doors to continued professional growth in the future.

Q: Do you have favourite camp song?
I don't have a particular one, but I absolutely love singing camps songs in a large group or when I'm on the bus with all the campers.

Q: What's one of your favourite memories from a past summer camp?
One year we had a huge water balloon fight—it was a ton of fun! We told the kids the day before that this was going to happen so some of them brought their ponchos and everyone just had a really great time.

Day Camp Staffer: Alex Ngai

Q: How long have you worked with YMCA camps?
I've been involved with the Y in some capacity for 17 years and have been working with the Y for six and half years. I have been directly involved with summer camps for about three years.

Q: With such an extensive connection to the organization, can you share a bit about your Y journey?
My first experience with the Y was through one of the before and after school child care centres, which I attended all the way until the end of grade 7. Then I was hired by the Y when I was 16 to work with summer camp as a registrar. In addition to that role I have also had roles in child and youth programs, in our membership centres and most recently have joined the YMCA Healthy Childhood Development team where I oversee our sports leagues throughout Greater Vancouver.

Q: Which camp will you be working at this summer?
This summer I will be working at The First Tee at Rupert Park Pitch & Putt, which is an outdoor adventure day camp focused on golf.

Q: What do you love about YMCA camps?
I really like how we get to welcome a whole bunch of kids and provide them with the opportunity to explore and learn new things about themselves. Also, whether they're in a YMCA camp for a week or the entire nine weeks of summer, just to see the progression and change in them as a result of their experience is really special.

From The First Tee perspective, I believe we need to keep kids active through sport. Being able to provide kids with a program where they can learn the basics and fundamentals of golf, and stay active at the same time, is one of the reasons why I really enjoy the role that I'm in!

Q: Do you have a favourite camp song?
It would definitely be "Baby Shark".

Q: What would be your dream summer vacation?
It would be to go to The Augusta National and watch The Masters golf tournament.

Q: What is your favourite ice cream flavour?
That would be Peanut Butter Cookie Dough!

Day Camp Staffer: Kyle Nand

Q: How many years have you worked with YMCA camps?
This will be my third year with YMCA camps.

Q: Which program will you be overseeing this summer?
This year, I will be the Team Lead at our Robert Lee YMCA day camp.

Q: What excites you about the summer ahead and taking on the Team Lead position?
I'm really looking forward to getting some new experiences with the Y. The past two years I've been a Group Leader, so moving up to a Team Lead position will let me develop more supervisory skills, which will be beneficial for my future. I'm hoping to have the opportunity to take on even higher management positions in the years to come, so working with YMCA camps is a great place to start.

Q: Do you have a favourite camp song?
Without question, it's "Reese's Peanut Butter Cup"!

Q: What would you say is one of your all-time favourite camp activities?
I love Gaga Ball! It's such a high intensity activity with lots of action. You're having to jump over the ball while keeping track of everything and everyone else in the court. It's a really great time!

When you join our YMCA team, you don’t just get a job – you’ll embark on an exciting path of career development.
