At the YMCA of Greater Vancouver, our swimming lessons for kids go beyond the technicalities of swimming—we teach children essential life skills that help them build confidence in and out of the water. If you’re considering enrolling your child in swimming lessons but aren’t sure where to start, keep reading below to learn more about our various swimming lessons for kids!

Everything You Need to Know about YMCA Swimming Lessons for Kids

From infants to preteens, the YMCA offers a wide variety of swimming lessons for kids of all ages. These include Parent and Tot lessons, Preschool swim lessons, School Age swim lessons and the YMCA Star Program.

  1. Parent and Tot Lessons

Our Parent and Tot lessons are perfect for little ones who are ready to be introduced to the water. It’s also a great opportunity for parents to get comfortable in the water with their babies. Your child will learn swim basics while spending quality time with you and, most importantly, having fun!

Keep an eye out for upcoming Parent and Tot lessons or check out our drop-in times currently offered at the Robert Lee YMCA.

  1. Preschool Swim Lessons

Our Preschool swim lessons, part of the L’il Dippers program, are perfect for kids ages 3 to 5 years. This program takes children through six different levels which include:

  • Bobbers
  • Floaters
  • Gliders
  • Divers
  • Surfers
  • Dippers

Each level builds up from the last one and keeps your child engaged in fun activities. Children start learning how to float, glide and kick. They build up to learning front and back crawl, deep water skills, how to rescue others and water safety. By the end of it, your child should also be able to swim a distance of 15 meters!

  1. School Age Swim Lessons

We also offer School Age swim lessons, part of the National YMCA Learn to Swim Program, to children between the ages of 6 and 12. This program takes your child through four different levels which include:

  • Otter
  • Seal
  • Dolphin
  • Swimmer

Much like the Preschool swim lessons, this program teaches children how to stay safe in the water. Kids develop essential swimming skills such as gliding, kicking and submerging. They also learn how to swim on their front and back, as well as underwater. Finally, they learn front and back crawl and how to tread water. In the end, your child should be able to swim a distance of 25 meters unaided!

All of our swimming lessons for kids are taught by a certified YMCA swim instructor.

  1. YMCA Star Program

The YMCA Star Program is broken up into seven different levels. The first four are open to children ages 6 to 12 who have completed the Swimmer level in the Learn to Swim Program. Star 1, Star 2, Star 3 and Star 4 further hone children’s swimming skills. Children learn progressively and will know how to do the breaststroke, as well as the egg-beater motion for treading water. They’ll also refine their front and back crawl and build endurance.

The next three levels are a part of the Star Leadership Program. Star 5 introduces children ages 6 and up to the butterfly stroke, as well as life-saving and first aid skills from the Rookie and Ranger levels of the Canadian Swim Patrol program.

Star 6 continues to focus on developing life-saving and first aid skills. Your child will also begin to learn how to teach others to swim! After completing this level, your child will be eligible to be certified as a Ranger in the Canadian Swim Patrol program.

The last level, Star 7, nurtures your child’s potential for lifeguarding. By the end of the program, he or she will be eligible to be certified as a Star in the Canadian Swim Patrol program!

Three Benefits of Enrolling Your Child In Our Swimming Lessons for Kids

  1. Our Lessons are Affordable

In addition to drop-in programs, swimming lessons for kids are also included in your child’s YMCA membership. However, if the cost of a membership is a concern, the YMCA also offers financial assistance to ensure that cost won’t be a barrier!

Keep in mind that swim lessons are included in youth, adult and senior memberships too.

  1. YMCA Swimming Lessons for Kids are Continuous

When you register your child for swim lessons, he or she will be in a convenient and consistent time throughout the year. You will also have a choice of the day and time, with occassional waitlists for some of our more popular times, which you’re free to change. Best of all, once you’ve signed up and selected your spot, it’s yours to keep until your child no longer needs it!

You may also register your child at any time. And when he or she has completed a level, he or she will also be able to immediately move to the next one without needing to be re-registered.

  1. Our Swim Lessons are FUN!

It wouldn’t be the YMCA without having lots of fun! All of our swim lessons are interactive and engaging. Over the years, we’ve seen many happy and smiling faces in our pools, as well as many friendships that have blossomed!
