Nature and Scope:

The YMCA Youth Works program is designed to support youth with barriers to employment to develop fundamental life, social and employability skills. This occurs through a series of workshops and training sessions followed by a practical work experience.

This position has the primary responsibility of working directly with participants of the program to set up work placements and provide on-going follow-up supports. The position will also involve assisting in setting up structure and process for the delivery of the program, outreach to the community in order to promote and recruit participants, and establishing connections with businesses in order to develop job opportunities as participants move towards employment. Additionally, the position will facilitate, improve, and evaluate workshops related to life, social, and employability skills. The work environment is very fast-paced, with a high volume of program participants.

 

Major Responsibilities: 

  • Assists participants in assessing their job skills for employment positions
  • Instructs in job seeking, application procedures, resume writing, interview preparation and job retention skills and attitudes
  • Facilitates in-classroom pre-employment, job search, career information workshops and presentations
  • Support multi-barriered youth with pre-employment supports such as housing, mental health, addictions, income supports, food security, hygiene & clothing and addressing other barriers to securing and sustaining employment
  • Coordinating and supporting job placements for program participants
  • Provides labour market and community resource information
  • Maintains contact with employers during the participants' employment and reports results to appropriate staff
  • Monitors participant performance on the job and counsels participants when job performance is not satisfactory; works with participants to improve job performance and gain necessary job skills, or reviews other employment options
  • Prepares forms and reports related to placement activities
  • Tracks participant activity and progress data
  • Initiates and maintains on-going contacts with a variety of business and industry representatives and job placement/training agencies to promote programs for participant placement
  • Makes cold calls to potential employers
  • Explains the benefits and employment support services provided by programs to employers, including addressing employer’s needs
  • Researches internet, agencies, and other resources for job leads
  • Locates jobs for participants who have successfully completed training programs
  • Matches job skills with applicant qualifications
  • Develops and executes creative outreach strategies to recruit program participants
  • Travels across Chilliwack with occasional trips to Vancouver for meetings

 

Qualifications:

  • Post-Secondary Degree or Certificate in a related discipline, or equivalent work experience
  • Experience working with youth or populations with multiple barriers
  • Strong facilitations skills with proven experience leading  pre-employment, job search, career information workshops and presentations to a youth audience
  • Established relationships within the local business community and proven track record in job placement recruitment
  • Commitment to working in a socially inclusive environment responding with sensitivity and personal awareness to the diverse needs of members including visible and non-visible dimensions of diversity 
  • Understanding of trauma-informed and harm reduction practices
  • Ability to be flexible, adaptable and multi-task in high demand environment
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills
  • Computer proficient – Microsoft Office (including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Office 365)
  • High degree of independence and initiative within a team environment
  • Emergency First Aid/CPR-C Certificate required, can be obtained with first 30 days of employment
  • Successful candidates will be required to provide a current and satisfactory Criminal Reference Check/Vulnerable Sector Search issued no later than six (6) months preceding your start date
  • Access to a vehicle and a valid drivers licence
