Robert Lee YMCA

Ages 10 to 19

Canada resettles approximately 3,500 youth refugees between the ages of 10 and 19 years every year. Many of these youth participate in the Canadian Orientation Abroad (COA) program, a pre-arrival orientation initiative provided by the International Organization for Migration, which provides visa-ready migrants with relevant, accurate, consistent and timely information needed to make informed settlement decisions.

In partnership with the YMCA of Greater Halifax/Dartmouth, the YMCA of Greater Toronto, the YMCA-YWCA of Winnipeg, the YMCA-YWCA of the National Capital Region, the YMCA-YWCA of Winnipeg and the YMCA of Greater Vancouver, COA is expanding its services to refugee youth preparing for a new life in Canada. Through a tailored suite of services, youth refugees will gain a greater understanding of life, settlement services, schools and education programs in Canada, and also have a more realistic understanding of the challenges they might face settling in Canada.

The YMCA of Greater Vancouver is pleased to participate in this initiative through:

  • Preparing and gathering information and resources tailored to the needs of individual refugees in their cities of destination
  • Facilitating connections with partner organizations to help with resettlement
  • Creating resources and sharing knowledge
