Ages 12 to 17
Do you work or volunteer with a group of young people who like to travel, learn, and explore? The Youth Exchanges Canada program may be right for your group! Groups of teens ages 12 to 17 are matched with a similar age group from another province/territory and swap for the cultural experience of a lifetime.
Each group of 10-30 participants travels to the other’s community to experience their culture and traditions, to learn from each other and to promote the understanding and appreciation of the diversity of Canada. As part of this great adventure, both groups work together on a service project that has a positive impact on the community.
Exchanges lasts at least five days (excluding travel time) and transportation costs are covered through funding from Heritage Canada for all eligible participants and organizers. Groups are responsible for funds to cover local transportation costs and other expenses incurred when hosting their twin exchange group.
All Canadian youth should have the opportunity to participate in this program, so where local resources are not available, additional support may be requested to ensure accessibility. Priority consideration is given to:
- Youth from low-income households
- Aboriginal youth
- Youth with disabilities
- Youth from rural or isolated areas
- Visible minority youth
The YMCA offers group leaders training and support throughout the exchange process.
