Meet Mitchell: Perseverance starts here

“I believe it’s because of the YMCA Healthy Heart program that I am alive.”

Ages 19+

Enhancing your health while living with a heart condition or cardiovascular disease is much easier with a little help. Healthy Heart is a community-based cardiac prevention, rehabilitation and maintenance program, that supports people living with cardiac risk through education and supervised exercise.

Offered in communities throughout the Lower Mainland in partnership with municipal recreational centres, this program has been helping cardiovascular patients and those at risk of developing heart disease live longer and improve quality of life since 1976.

The program is designed to help cardiovascular patients and those at risk of developing heart disease take an active role in improving their health, increasing their physical fitness, and reducing the risk of future heart problems. We help patients through an individually designed program including:

  • Individualized exercise prescription based on health assessment
  • Evidence based cardiac risk reduction
  • Medically managed exercise classes
  • Maintenance cardiac exercise classes
  • Nutrition counseling with a Registered Dietitian
  • Weight management
  • Educational and social activities for participants and families
  • Goal setting to identify and improve health behaviors
  • Peer support
  • Resources for stress management and smoking cessation
  • Support provided by Medical Director, Dr. Benny Lau, MD, FRCPC*

Participants must be referred to the program by their doctor. Take the physician referral form to your doctor and contact us after this is complete.

To find the location nearest you, please see below 'Where It's Offered'.

There is a fee for the program. Participants who are experiencing financial hardship are invited to apply for YMCA Financial Assistance.
