Ages 6 to 12

About The First Tee

Forrre! In this unique program, kids ages 6-12 learn how to set goals and build character while learning fundamental golf skills. Through the game of golf, kids also learn essential life skills and positive values have a whole lot of fun. Let’s face it—kids learn best when they’re having fun! Whether it’s learning to be honest while keeping score, perseverance when losing or good judgement while making a shot, lessons learned stick long after the program is over.

The YMCA of Greater Vancouver's First Tee program is a collaboration between The First Tee, Vancouver Parks Board and the Advisory Board of The First Tee of Greater Vancouver. It is the first and only program to operate in Canada and we have served more than 1,000 young people annually through our programming. And it's making a difference. Our programs are having a positive impact on participants, their families and communities.

Classes are led by qualified coaches and help kids learn nine core values: honesty, integrity, sportsmanship, respect, confidence, responsibility, perseverance, courtesy and judgement. Values like these transfer to other aspects of life and help youth achieve success in school, friendships and eventually in the workforce and their own families. Through golf and our core values, your kids and teens will learn life skills like:

  • Making proper introductions
  • Managing emotions
  • Resolving conflicts
  • Setting up step-by-step goals
  • Planning for the future
  • Appreciating diversity

Advancing Through the Program

From age 5 through 17, youth progress through different levels by demonstrating The First Tee Nine Core Values, life and golf skills as well as passing an assessment. All participants regardless of age start at the PLAYer level. The pinnacle of The First Tee is completing Ace.

  • Target (age 5+) - Tee it up for the first time in an age-appropriate environment.
  • Player (age 7+) – Tee up and learn the game of golf and The First Tee’s Code of Conduct. Master the Nine Core Values and build a foundation to be course-ready.
  • Par (age 9+) – Focus on interpersonal and self-management skills on and off the course.
  • Birdie (age 11+) – Emphasis on setting goals and making them a reality.
  • Eagle (age 13+) – Learn resilience, conflict resolution, and future planning.
  • Ace (age 15+) – Put it all together and hone in on setting goals, career education, and giving back to the community.

After-School Programs

After-School program are 1 ½ hour classes led by qualified coaches. The sessions help kids learn nine core values: honesty, integrity, sportsmanship, respect, confidence, responsibility, perseverance, courtesy and judgment. We encourage youth to dream big and practice effective goal-setting techniques they can use for life. From aces to triple bogeys, golf is a perfect platform for helping kids and teens develop character as it closely parallels real life. Just like in life, young golfers experience the highs and lows of the game.

Outreach Programs

Our Outreach Programs introduce young people to the game of golf in a safe environment that promotes curiosity about the game while integrating essential links between golf and life skills seamlessly. Outreach efforts to young people include activities offered at after-school program or other youth serving agencies. Target outreach also provides education opportunities to parent and board members at promotional events (i.e. Festivals, Pro D days).

TARGET is built around six components:

  • Take Aim: creates fun experiences that spark curiosity about golf. Also emphasizes that golf is a target-oriented game that involves striking a ball with a club to get the ball into a hole.
  • Anyone Can Play: highlights diversity in the game of golf.
  • Respect: emphasizes respect for themselves, others, rules of the game and the environment.
  • Golf Is a Game: develops decision-making and golf related skills needed to play the game and learning how to identify and overcome challenges to golf-related targets.
  • Enjoy Yourself: reinforces the premise that having a positive attitude toward learning can make golf and almost any activity fun.
  • Try It: provides closure for the TARGET program by giving participants specific information on how to pursue their interest in the game of golf and continue their participation in The First Tee Life Skills Experience.

In-School Programming

In elementary schools across the Lower Mainland, many students are teeing off for the first time thanks to The First Tee In-School Program, bringing our curriculum to your child’s gym either after-school or during physical education class. In partnership with British Columbia Golf Association we are teaching elementary students The First Tee’s Nine Core Values and Nine Healthy Habits, we’re putting them on the course to a healthy and active lifestyle.
