YMCA Immigrant Services programs help newcomers integrate and help long-term residents connect to new immigrants- these programs and activities are funded by Citizenship and Immigration Canada. Social and Educational Events (SEE), based at the Robert Lee YMCA, are fun monthly activities and events 3-5 hours in length for newcomers and their families, combining recreation, social connections, intercultural and intergenerational exchange and information on life in Canada. These include cultural celebrations such as Lunar New Year, recreational activities such as Father’s Day picnics, guided hikes and yoga classes, and special interest workshops and dialogues such as Parenting in Canada or Community Gardening.

The SEE Committee volunteers will assist with all aspects of planning and implementing the monthly events and activities including logistics and coordination, seeking community in-kind support, participant reception and registration, kitchen help, ESL facilitation and event set up and clean up. Volunteers are required to attend each monthly event and participate in monthly SEE Committee meetings.

Requirements

  • Strong command of the English language and knowledge of Canadian culture
  • Good interpersonal and intercultural communication skills
  • Previous cross-cultural experience or a strong interest in learning about other cultures
  • Reliable and able to commit to a minimum of 6 months

  • A current and satisfactory Criminal Reference Check/Vulnerable Sector Search issued no later than six (6) months preceding your start date
  • Three references  (two of these should be professional references)
