Nature & Scope:

The Group Leader positions are integral to the delivery of the YMCA Camps program. Group Leaders possess the skills necessary to provide program and supervision to the campers attending YMCA Camps. These team members should possess strong abilities in several camp related activities, including out tripping skills (canoe and/or hiking), in addition to demonstrated abilities to facilitate growth and group development among young people. 

Volunteer Group Leaders:

Volunteer staffing opportunities at Camp Elphinstone are available for both Day Camp and Overnight Camp. Volunteers receive training in many areas of camp.  Volunteers are required to participate in pre-camp training and commit to a minimum term of one month.  Candidates able to commit to a full summer position are preferred.

Volunteer Group Leaders work in pairs and are responsible for meeting the emotional, physical, and safety needs of a group of up to 10 campers. Group Leaders are responsible for the planning and delivery of cabin or day camp programs. Volunteer Group Leaders may have the opportunity to work as a lodge host to provide care and program instruction for campers from youth-based organizations like Diabetes Canada, Moomba, and Eureka.

Overnight Camp Group Leaders – work for 8 weeks with children ages 5-15 in our overnight camp program

Day Camp Group Leaders – work with children ages 5-12 in the day camp program; assist with program & camper care duties after the day camp hours (Sept 1, 2018 End Date)

Major Responsibilities:

  • Role modeling respectful and caring relationships with staff and campers, appropriate behaviour, and the core values of the YMCA
  • Understanding that each staff members’ role in the camp community is to serve our clients (campers) and to assist other staff in serving campers
  • Understanding that the greater good of our client’s experience must be at the forefront in every decision made
  • Read, understand, teach and enforce the policies of the YMCA and YMCA Camps
  • Working with their partner, group leaders are expected to:
  • Plan and deliver safe, fun and educational programming appropriate to the ages and abilities of campers
  • Assist with or take part in camp-wide programming
  • Manage the group dynamics to ensure a positive experience for all campers
  • Manage the behaviour of the group to ensure all campers are emotionally and physically safe and to ensure that all campers feel supported, educated and nurtured
  • Ensure the needs of all of the campers are being met (including physical, emotional, social, medical and nutritional needs)
  • Provide 24-hr supervision and care that is appropriate to the developmental ages of their cabin group
  • Develop positive and appropriate individual relationships with each camper
  • Complete administrative duties relevant to their campers
  • Protect the assets of the YMCA through proper instruction and appropriate use
  • Provide leadership and mentoring to their volunteer partner to ensure a positive experience for the volunteer and campers


Group Leaders may be required to assist in duties not listed above. The YMCA expects the support of all staff members in fulfilling objectives that may not be specific to this position.



  • Must be 17 or older by July 1, 2018
  • Living on site at Camp Elphinstone is a requirement of this position
  • Must attend YMCA Camps Staff Training
  • Standard First Aid and CPR-C
  • Bronze Cross (NLS preferred)
