Meet Frances Larush, a valued long-time member of our Bob Chan-Kent Family YMCA.
When Frances's husband passed away 24 years ago, her son introduced her to the Y on Hocking Avenue—a place where she could keep healthy, find support and not feel alone. Since that first visit, the Y has become much more than a fitness centre that Frances frequents twice a week. It is a strong community that takes care of each other, a place where friendly faces greet her upon arrival, where she enjoys a social coffee club with a network of members and a regular fitness class that keeps her moving and active.
She laughed as she described some of the moves the instructor has her doing, explaining the camaraderie in the class, the laughs they share, and how participants meet each other where they are at – whatever their age or ability.
Frances celebrated her 99th birthday this month and was honoured at the YMCA’s Seniors Holiday Luncheon by Bob Chan-Kent and all her YMCA family.
“She is an inspiration to all,” said Karen Price, Centre Manager.
Of course, we couldn’t help but ask Frances: “What is your secret to good health and longevity?”
Some things we learned....
“I could be feeling miserable, and then I come to the Y. I'll leave without any pain or anything. It's funny, exercise seems to do me good.”
And “they are all so nice,” Frances commented about the Y Volunteers.
What fuels Frances?
Breakfast consists of oatmeal with a prune, date, crystalized ginger, banana and some nuts.
Her favourite Meal?
Yorkshire pudding and roast beef, and liver & onions for special occasions including birthdays and anniversaries.
Happiest day?
“When I got married.”
We concluded our time with Frances by letting her know how excited her Y-Family was to celebrate her big day.
“I haven’t done anything extraordinary,” she said.
Well Frances, we think you are more than extraordinary! You bring JOY to so many at the Bob Chan-Kent Family YMCA, and we’re honoured to know you.
Happy Birthday!
