Why They Work Here

Ivy Roe, Activity Leader
Years at the Y: 3
#YWorkHere: There are lots of opportunities to be creative.
“I just graduated with my PDP (teacher education). I was volunteering in school classrooms while I was looking for work and I wanted something where I could work closely with kids and get to know them, particularly kids with diverse needs. The hours at the YMCA are flexible and I was able to use the stuff I was studying and put it into practice. It’s a good experience, and it’s great if you love kids. It’s very flexible and you get a lot of training, especially to help equip you when you first start!”

Jay Rajah, Team Leader
Years at the Y: 5
#YWorkHere: I get to live authentically and be a positive role model to kids.
“When I got my promotion to Team Leader, some of my biggest cheerleaders were the team members I met four-plus years ago. Although there have been staffing changes, new staff members, older staff members and management all saw my potential and believed in me. I am so grateful to the YMCA for supporting and encouraging me to always do better and grow as an individual. It’s a beautiful family to be a part of. Everyone cares for each other and has our best interests at heart. They really believe in me and have pushed me to grow and work my way up. Deciding to work for the Y is the best decision I’ve ever made.”

Bobby Ocampo, Team Leader
Years at the Y: 11
#YWorkHere: They take care of you at the Y. There’s a lot of support.
“The relationships I’ve built with the children have been the most valuable thing for me. When I started, I met kids who were in Kindergarten and Grade 1, and now they’re in Grade 8, 9 or 10. One of the greatest experiences is that they keep coming back just to say "hi", and some of them come back to volunteer. They tell me "only if you’re here." It means they trust me, and we’ve built a long-lasting relationship – I helped guide them through to their early adult life. Those relationships are what keep me happy with my position. I have a lot of good memories with these children. You just don’t get this sort of joy and fulfillment in other jobs.”
